This year's judging is taking place at London's Olympia. This venue is impressive--it is huge, with incredible light coming in from the massive rounded ceiling. My description isn't really doing the venue justice, but see for yourself:
We've had a lot of judges asking us about Olympia. Most think it was originally built as a train station (which I certainly thought myself), but a little history about the venue reveals the truth behind its incredible stature and beauty.
In 1884, John Whitley founded the National Agricultural Hall Company with the intention of building the country's largest covered show centre. With the name "Olympia" picked out for the exhibition hall, Henry Edward Coe was commissioned to design the building. He used his design from the Agricultural Hall in Islington (build 25 years earlier) to come up with a similar barrel roof for Olympia. At its highest point, the roof is 115 feet high, which helps to support the massive frame of the rest of the hall (1200 tons of iron, plus 85 tons of glass and 75 tons of zinc). Built in 1885, Olympia's overall impressiveness remains and the venue has hosted many events, including motor exhibitions, circuses, and a variety of musical performances.
