We came, we got a bit wet, we made a pencil

 

Well, despite conditions which  even the most optimistic amongst us would have to describe as truly miserable, D&AD brought a bit of yellow pencil sunshine to Trafalgar Square today.

Using the designs of an origami artist and with the help of some packaging professionals we constructed a large-scale cardboard pencil which was being filmed to produce a film as part of the D&AD Awards Call for Entries campaign. 

We took a gamble on the weather not being atrocious all day, and after waiting for a couple of hours, finally got the pencil up around 2pm. It proudly stood in front of Nelson's Column until around 4pm before getting a bit soggy.

Join us at Trafalgar Square tomorrow

The weather outside may be frightful, but D&AD are treating Trafalgar Square visitors to a bit of creative festivity tomorrow. There’ll be cardboard galore, as we set ourselves the challenge to make the biggest Pencil London's ever seen. Our team will  be in the square from 9:30am to 4pm on Friday 28 November.

Last nights forum at the Slaughtered Lamb was jam-packed and generated some very lively debate. Thanks to our 9 speakers who braved the stage and to everyone for coming. This is the work the judges selected to discuss. For those who couldn't make it a film is being edited as we speak, keep and eye here for that. D&AD Members Forum: Magazine Design

Four leading editorial designers meet to discuss some of the challenges facing the publishing industry today. Each designer will talk through ten examples of editorial design they find interesting/relevant. These brief presentations will inform a conversation between the designers, which will subsequently be opened to the audience.

We hope to get some lively chat about state of the industry and other timely issues. The panel are: Jeremy Leslie, Executive Creative Director, John Brown (Chair); David McKendrick, Art Director, Esquire; and Matt Willey, Creative Director, Studio8 Design. Plus one more speaker to be confirmed.
